WELLS BAUM [bomb]
MUSIC
It all starts with exposure. My Dad used to bring home mixtapes from Europe. I spent summers carrying around a boombox like Radio Raheem, playing new tunes on the street.
I like discovering new music. I have three external hard drives to show for it. I even made my own beats in college. Music is fun, meditative, and a cheap habit.
WEB
I remember logging onto the Internet for the first time in 1996, before Google. I typed in nba.com and watched my text sit there. I finally hit enter on the keyboard and there I was, this was my railroad to invention.
I like using the Internet to market stuff. I use myself as the guinea pig. I create content for the masses, coming up with new ways to chop up my writings, books, music, and photos to generate leads. I share all of it.
MUSIC + WEB = WORK
If you combine music and web marketing, that’s pretty much the direction I’ve gone in my career. I believe everything connects. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you reconsider your options. Hiccups are good, they are always necessary pains to steer me in the right direction.
SELF IMPROVEMENT
I was a late bloomer so I had to adapt. For years, I was the smallest on the basketball court, football, and soccer fields. But I built my skills and learned to thrive around what God gave me.
God gave me pertinacity. I like to perfect things and it’s been an important tool in many parts of my life. However, perfection caused a serious breakdown a few years ago. I was even diagnosed and wrote a book about it. Life balance, love, and acceptance are the most important.
PRAGMATISM
One summer, I read a book called The Metaphysical Club by Louis Menand. The book was in line with my way of thinking.
Pragmatism encourages confident decision making based on what you consider to be true. It propels action, it puts the bones in the goose. It’s how we evolve, mentally and physically. But it also preaches openness. If you’re open to the possibility, you can make connections between a diversity of things.
SELF IMPROVEMENT + PRAGMATISM= GOALS
I set goals in each area of my life: personal, career, financial, family, and health. I meditate on them once a day and I try to meet all them without getting so driven that they make me unhappy.
ARSENAL & FIFA WORLD CUP
I went to the Highbury Stadium in London back in 1998 to watch Arsenal play Sheffield United in a FA Cup match. I’ve been a diehard Arsenal fan ever since.
I also went to the last two World Cups in Germany and in South Africa. Those are memories I’ll never forget. I’m going to every World Cup until I die.
